The Simpsons: Burns and the Bees

Season 20, Episode 8: Burns and the Bees

Bart gets dared to scare the second graders by dropping a beehive onto them. When Bart completes the dare, the school yard finds out that all the bees are missing. At this point in time Beekeeper Willie astounds Lisa by claiming that all around the world bees were dying. As a result, Lisa felt it was her duty to start a colony of bees so that they were able to grow into a healthy collection.

In the meantime, Burns attends a Billionaires retreat where they enjoy food fights, swimming and other “financially constructive” activities. After winning a basketball team in a poker tournament, Burns decides to entice his fans by building his state of the art stadium. It is here that the conflict of interest comes into play.

Overall, this episode was very good. There were some excellent jokes as well as witty comments coming from Homer which are followed by stupidity – as always. It is enjoyable although the main plot line restricts the exploration of the writers.

Blackboard Joke: Jesus is not mad his birthday is on Christmas

Couch Gag:

The opening sequence is winterized with snow and Christmas decorations. The Simpsons rush onto the couch and the camera pulls back to reveal that they are a reflection on an ornament from their Christmas tree.

Allusions:

  • Wall-E was featured in Homer’s imagination of a world without honey. He runs around trying to locate some honey – and mysteriously Wall-E hands it to him. In turn, as Homer drinks it with pleasure he is then gobbled up and compressed into a cube!
  • The owner (supposedly) of Facebook was also mentioned when Burns attacks him with tomato sauce as he says “Take that founder of Facebook”.
  • The Billionaires play a game of Quiddich (in referrence to Harry Potter) at their retreat

Personal Rating: 4.5/5
